Climate

The coastal region of Georgia has a relatively moderate climate. Average temperatures of the islands are slightly lower than on the mainland. Sea breezes offer relief from intense summer heat. Daily maximum temperatures in July and August (the warmest months) are usually in the 80s and low 90s. The islands are the only part of the state south of Atlanta that has mean daily maximum temperatures below 90F in July and August (Carter 1967).

Winters are relatively mild and short. The average minimum temperature for December and January (the coldest months) is about 43F. On the average, there are 305 freeze-free days at Brunswick and 267 at Savannah (Carter 1967)

Tybee Island is a unique small coastal barrier island only 11 miles east of Savannah, GA. The origin of the unusual name of "Tybee" is in itself a legend. Native Americans came to the island to hunt and fish, and gave it the name Tybee, which is a Euchee Indian word meaning "salt."	Approximately 2,500 locals call Tybee home with the summer population swelling to 8,000 at times. Tybee has many restaurants - from fine dining to favorites with a more casual atmosphere. Tybee Island Light Station Ordered by General James Oglethorpe, Governor of the 13th colony, in 1732, the Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding mariners safe entrance into the Savannah River for over 270 years. The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America's most intact having all of its historic support buildings on its five-acre site. Beach lovers from all over the world come to the Tybee Island beaches, Lighthouse, Marine Science center, Museums, Fort Screven and nearby Fort Pulaski.   Tybee Island's history is reflected by the Lighthouse, constructed in 1739. The structure, which stands today is 154 feet high.

Numerous historic attractions on or near the island range from Fort Pulaski National Monument, Fort Pulaski was a Civil War - era fort and is now operated by the National Park Service, to the famous Savannah Historic District, located west of Tybee Island.

Tybee is a peaceful 15 minute drive over the marsh from historic Savannah, GA. Savannah is the setting for the popular novel, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."
	Fort Screven, on Tybee Island was established on March 18, 1898, though construction was not completed until 1901. Its original name, Camp Graham, was changed in honor of James Screven. Screven was a Georgia Militia brigadier general who was killed at Midway Church in 1778, during the Revolutionary war. The Georgia Legislature had passed a law in 1786 providing for a fort to be named in honor of General Screven, but the fortification was never built. In 1808, however, the Federal government obtained jurisdiction over the property on Tybee Island that would become Fort Screven. Actual title was acquired in 1875, and the fort -- armed with 20 guns -- was active in the Spanish-American War and both World Wars. From 1897 to 1947, Fort Screven was an integral part of America's coastal defense system. Troops trained and stood guard on Tybee Island throughout the Spanish-American War of 1898, World War I, and World War II. In 1947 the Fort was closed and sold to the town of Tybee.
